Skin piercing registration

Do I need a licence? 

Anyone who wishes to carry out the following skin piercing activities must be registered with their local council (unless they are a registered medical doctor or are working under the direct supervision of such a person).

  • Tattooing and semi-permanent skin-colouring
  • Cosmetic skin piercing
  • Acupuncture
  • Electrolysis

Why do I need to be registered?

The purpose of registration is to ensure that essential health and hygiene standards are maintained in any premises where these activities are carried out.

To apply, please return the skin piercing registration form with the appropriate fee enclosed. You may also be interested in the relevant bylaws

How much will I pay? 

Acupuncture, tattooing, electrolysis and cosmetic piercing and semi-permanent colouring

One fee is payable for each premises. So if you carry out a number of treatments (e.g. tattooing and skin piercing), the fee applied will be the highest of fees shown.

Up to 3 additional practitioners at initial registration thereafter an additional £50 per practitioner £110
