Council tax scams

We have been advised of some recent council tax scams.

Companies offering valuations, council tax banding and area comparisons

Residents have recently been contacted by companies saying they can offer valuations, council tax banding and area comparisons of their property in the hope of saving them thousands of pounds in council tax.

However they will charge a ‘small’ administration fee of anything upwards of £55. If you are contacted by one of these companies please remember that the Valuation Office Agency offers the same service for free.

Email scams

We have been told about a scam where people are receiving an email saying they are due a council tax refund and told that they will receive the refund after completing an online form. This is a scam and you should not click the link in the email.

We have also been made aware of the following email scams:

  • Emails stating you are due a council tax refund and asking for your bank account details to receive the refund. We will never ask you to provide your bank account details over email.
  • Emails which appear to have come from HM Revenues and Customs, advising that you are due a council tax refund and asking you to click a link. This is a scam and you should not click the link in the email.

If you want to apply for a council tax refund, you can complete our online form.

Phone scams

Residents have been receiving fraudulent calls where they are told that they are entitled to a council tax refund and being asked for their bank details or card number to receive the refund. The caller knows details about the person such as their name, address and sometimes their council tax banding.

We will never ask you for your card details over the phone to arrange a refund. If you are in any doubt please call us on 01227 862300. If you have been a victim please contact the Police straight away, or report it to Action Fraud

Residents have also been receiving fraudulent calls where they are told that they are entitled to a council tax refund. They were asked to pay an administration fee and given a premium rate telephone number to call for further information.

We will never ask you for an overpayment administration fee. If you are in any doubt please call us on 01227 862 300.

Text message scam

We have been told about a recent scam where people are receiving a text message to say they are due a council tax refund and being asked to visit a website link.

The link takes the customer to an online form which looks very much like the GOV.UK website.

Do not complete this form as it is a scam. If you receive a text message similar to this please contact Action Fraud or the Police.
