A temporary pay and display public car park in Station Road West has opened today (Tuesday 21 February).

The 108-space car park is located near to the mini-roundabout at the junction with The Spires. It’s been opened by the city council ahead of the start of ground investigation and archaeological work at the existing council car park in Station Road West.

From Monday 6 March, half of that 129-space car park will be unavailable for a period of time as the preparations for a new multi-storey car park get underway. Construction on this could start in January 2018, subject to planning permission.

Chairman of the council’s Regeneration and Property Committee, Cllr Ben Fitter-Harding, said the temporary car park would only remain in place until any new multi-storey opened.

He added: “We’re pleased to have met our commitment to opening the temporary car park in Station Road West before any sections of the existing car park are closed for the initial preparatory work. The plans for the new multi-storey are taking shape and we will be coming out with a planning application in due course.

“This is all part of the comprehensive package of parking proposals that we announced in early 2016, investing in parking in the city using income from charges.”
