Apply for housing benefit

How to apply for housing benefit if you're pension age or you live in supported accommodation.

If you're working age, you normally get housing costs covered by Universal Credit

You need to apply for housing benefit instead if you're pension age or you live in supported accommodation.

Choose the drop-down that applies to you:

I'm pension age

You are pension age if you have reached the qualifying age for Pension Credit, or you will in the next 17 weeks.

If you live with your partner, both of you will need to be pension age. This does not apply if you have been getting Pension Credit since 14 May 2019.

The amount you get is based on your household income and any benefits you get.

I live in supported accommodation

Your landlord must be a housing association, a registered charity, a not-for-profit voluntary organisation, an English non-metropolitan county council, a local authority hostel or a domestic violence refuge.

You need to give us information about you and your property, and the care or support your landlord gives you. This means it might take longer for us to decide how much housing benefit you get.
