Some EU citizens can no longer vote or stand as a candidate in local elections. This includes the Police and Crime Commissioner election.
The UK Government has negotiated agreements with EU Member States to allow EU citizens living in the UK to vote. This means they will still be able to vote and stand in elections, in return for the same right for UK citizens living in that country.
Currently, these agreements have been made with:
- Spain
- Portugal
- Luxembourg
- Poland
- Denmark
The changes do not affect citizens of the Republic of Ireland or Commonwealth nations.
Other EU citizens who were living in the UK before the end of the EU Withdrawal Agreement Implementation Period (before 1 January 2021) can still vote and stand in elections.
We'll contact you in the next few weeks if you're an EU citizen on our electoral register.
You can find out more about this on the Electoral Commission website.
