We are required to regularly review and assess air quality in Canterbury, Herne Bay, Whitstable and the surrounding villages. We report the results to the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA).
We also monitor levels of nitrogen dioxide and 'particulate matter' - things like dust and soot. If pollution levels exceed the set target, then we'll declare it as an 'air quality management Area' (AQMA) and draw up an action plan for reducing pollution.
