Make a complaint about a councillor

Find out how to make a complaint about a councillor and how it will be handled.

If you think a councillor or parish councillor has broken the Members' Code of Conduct in our Constitution you can make a complaint.

Anyone can make a complaint about a Councillor. You'll need to download a complaints form:

and email it to democracy@canterbury.gov.uk or you can post it to:

The Monitoring Officer
Canterbury City Council
14 Rose Lane
Canterbury
CT1 2UR

Only the name of the person making the complaint is shared with the Councillor. There is some discretion for this to be withheld.

What happens next

You'll get confirmation that we have received your complaint within ten working days.

The Monitoring Officer and an independent person will assess your complaint against approved criteria, taking account of the Councillor's comments, and decide if a breach of code has occurred.

The Monitoring Officer will contact you with their decision and the reasons for it. You cannot appeal against the decision.
