How our Corporate Plan was shaped by you

Find out how we've used your feedback during consultation to help create the Corporate Plan.

Between December 2023 and March 2024, we consulted on our proposals to build our next Corporate Plan around the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

We asked for your views on how to make the SDGs relevant to our district’s challenges, and which goals you felt were most important.

We had more than 80 responses and more than 80% of these supported using the SDGs to develop and achieve the new Corporate Plan priorities.

Your feedback on the plan

The SDGs you relate to the most are:

  • clean water and sanitation,
  • life on land,
  • quality education,
  • peace, justice and strong institutions,
  • sustainable communities,
  • affordable and clean energy,
  • no poverty,
  • zero hunger, and
  • good health and wellbeing

You suggested we should:

  • Work with educational organisations like Canterbury Climate Action Partnership, residents' associations, Canterbury Biodiversity Group and the Sustainable Development Goals forum.
  • Focus on affordable housing and sustainable transport to reduce congestion.
  • Make sure we take local action to achieve success.

How we have responded

Your feedback has been really important in making sure the plan supports community priorities and emphasises a partnership-focused approach.

  • Prioritising key themes and SDGs: we will make sure that SDGs are referenced, where appropriate, in future policy development and show a clear line to our Corporate Plan priorities.
  • Enhanced partnerships: we’re committed to working closely with partners to kickstart creative ideas and add value to our investment. We want to prioritise co-working with community groups.
  • Sustainable transport and housing: we see the council as sitting at the centre of sustainability and liveability; working to make our community more liveable, more engaging and doing the right thing for the planet.
  • Local actions: we have created our priorities with a focus on local actions, making sure it is practical and effective for the unique needs of the district.

We will continue to ask for your input as we move forward, supporting a collaborative environment that brings positive change.
