Council tax has to be paid for most homes, whether they're rented or owned, or lived in or not.
The amount you pay depends on the band your home has been given, and your personal circumstances. You'll also pay an extra charge for the year if you live in a parished area (known as a 'precept').
Your band is shown on your bill and is decided by the Valuation Office Agency (VOA), not by us.
The VOA puts every home into a band based on what its selling price would have roughly been on 1 April 1991. This means any changes in property market prices will not affect your band. Find out more about how the VOA values properties
